Light is just plain cool and quantum physics is pretty fun stuff. There are Scientific and Spiritual aspects to quantum physics and some see the keys to universal understanding in the fundamental tenants of quantum mechanics.

     We are in a "sea of fluctuating energy" with the illusion of tangibility.  Light painting does not have to be anything other than waiving lights around, but very often the process of waiving those lights around in the dark for hours plays out like a meditative action.  The mental and physical state is tranquil but focused.  Our mind and body are functioning in a complex interactivity that is directly aimed at manifesting a thought/image using light, which is intangible and has wave-particle duality.
